Albegaria Do Penedo

Tucked in a northeastern corner of the island, Porto da Cruz has a stunning coastal setting making it a favourite stop for walkers who come to explore this beautiful island. The Albegaria do Penedo lies in the heart of this former fishing village on the promenade, next to an attractive lido with a seawater swimming pool. Offering clean and simple accommodation with its own restaurant, it's an attractive proposition for the more independent traveller who wants to get away from the crowd and discover the rugged coastline hereabouts with its vertiginous slopes and stunning vistas over land and sea.

The attractions of this small parish reward the curious, one of them being an old sugar cane factory which has been producing sugar the same way since 1927. Stunning views are commonplace on Madeira but if you can face the challenge of a steep road, head for Penha d'Aguia, a rock that separates Porto da Cruz from Faial - the views are to be recommended.
Porto da Cruz is also famous for its wine. Known as vinho seco americano, it's a dry red made from the americana grape, and is celebrated in September at the annual Festa do Vinho.
