Guide to Horefto

'With its heart-stealing scenery and sleepy vibe, this unspoilt piece of the Greek puzzle is, quite simply, charming.'

It's said the Gods chose Pelion as their playground and one look at Horefto will reveal why. As setting's go, this one's special. Look one way and it's all velvety-green countryside. Look the other and the scene is one of sparkling blue seas. In between the two, lies one of the most beautiful beaches of the Eastern Pelion. Once a famous port, Horefto's got postcard good-looks down to a fine art. And they're complemented by a sleepy, village-by-the-sea vibe that means relaxation's a surety. Like all the beaches on the Aegean side of Pelion, the one at Horefto never gets crowded. But if you're seeking that away-from-it-all feel, follow the winding path on the north side of the village. It brings you to the footprint-free sands of Parisena and Analipsi. Beaches aside, Horefto has a handful of bars and tavernas with an authentic twist. For more choice, however, take the ten-minute drive to Zagora. The largest village in the Pelion, it was also one of the most important years ago, with its success rooted in the silk industry. Reminders of its wealthy past are everywhere, from its grand old mansions to its beautiful churches packed with icons and frescoes. Call in at the Pelion's oldest school, whose past students include Rigas Ferreos, leader of the revolution against the Turks. Then see the famous library of Zagora, whose shelves creak under the weight of more than 15,000 books and papers. Another thing you can't miss in this part of the world is the fruit. Today, silk has moved aside for apples. In fact, the orchards here supply stores and markets all over Greece. When you've finished exploring Zagora, follow the apple-scented road back to Horefto, whose seafront tavernas keep the wine flowing, the mood relaxed and the view nothing short of enchanting.
